Abstract:

Background and aim: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease. Although the etiology of this disease is unknown, some factors including stress, antioxidant deficiency, and folic acid deficiency have been claimed to have a role in its incidence. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the serum folic acid level in OLP patients and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: in this case-control study, 52 OLP patients (36 females and 16 males) were selected as the case group, and 48 healthy individuals (36 females and 12 males) were assigned to the control group. The serum folic acid level was measured in the two groups. Data were analyzed using T-test with the level of significance set at 0.05. Results: the mean and standard deviation (SD) of serum folic acid level was equal to 8.74±4.11 ng/ml in the case group and 9.12±3.5 ng/ml in the control group with no statistically significant difference (P=0.12). Conclusion: The results of the present study indicated that the serum folic acid level in OLP patients did not have a significant difference with that in healthy subjects.

Comparison of Serum Autoantibodies to Desmogleins I, III in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus and Healthy Controls

Background & Objective: Lichen planus is a mucocutaneous disease which is relatively common and in 30-70% of patients, mucosal lesions can be seen and known as a precancerous lesion but its etiology is not completely understood. Desmogleins I and III are the main desmosomal transmembrane proteins. These proteins have been identified as the autoantigen of the autoimmune disease. The aim...

Comparison of Periodontal Status in Gingival Oral Lichen Planus Patients and Healthy Subjects

Background and Objective. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic mucocutaneous disease. OLP can occur in different oral sites such as gingiva. The purpose of study was to evaluate the periodontal status of OLP patients with desquamative gingivitis (DG) and compare it with that of healthy control. Methods. This study was case-control. 32 patients with gingival OLP as a case group and 32 he...

Evaluation of serum Malondialdehyde level in patients with oral lichen planus

Introduction: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a useful determinant to show high level of lipid peroxidation which lead to impaired cell function. Previous studies have mentioned there is a relationship between high oxidative stress and low anti-oxidant activity in patients with oral lichen planus. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum level of Malondialdehyde as an indicator of oxidative stress ...

Serum and salivary levels of vitamin D in oral lichen planus patients

Introduction: Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory function. The role of vitamin D deficiency has been established in the development of many types of cancers and autoimmune diseases. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic autoimmune in oral cavity. This study aimed to evaluate the serum and salivary levels of total vitamin 25 (OH) D3 in patients with the OLP and to assess...

Serum Level of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Patients with Different Clinical SubtypeS of Oral Lichen Planus

Background: Oral lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease with a poorly understood etiology. The role of angiogenesis in the development of different chronic inflammatory diseases is of great concern. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important regulator of angiogenesis. We aimed to evaluate the serum level of VEGF in patients with oral lichen planus compared with normal in...

Serum level of Interleukin-8 in subjects with diabetes, diabetes plus oral lichen planus, and oral lichen planus: A biochemical study

BACKGROUND Correlation between diabetes mellitus (DM) and oral lichen planus (OLP) seems probable. Since Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is an important inflammatory mediator involved in both conditions, this study aimed to measure and compare the serum level of IL-8 in DM, OLP, and DM + OLP patients in comparison with healthy individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross sectional study was conducted o...
